How to Find Small Sofas for Small Rooms
Do you have a small living room, dorm room or apartment that is in need of a sofa? Are you unsure of what to purchase in order to incorporate both comfort and spaciousness?
If you already have a small space, the last thing you probably want is a large sofa that makes the room appear even smaller. After a hard day at work or school, you want to relax in your home, not feel confined and claustrophobic in a small living area due to a bulky piece of furniture.
The difficulties inherent in a small living room are not insurmountable. There are various options to choose from in small-scale sofas. You do not have to forego style and comfort to save on space!
What to Look for in a Small Sofa
There is more to space saving design when it comes to seating in a small living or family room than choosing a loveseat. You might be asking yourself what other options are available. Surely, a sofa’s dimensions are not the only avenues that need to be investigated, right?
Correct! There is more to choosing a small sofa than just its size. Along with size, there are different sofa features that are available that make a sofa appear sleeker and less bulky.
It is important to have a sofa that would not overpower the space in your small living area.
What Makes a Sofa Appear “Small Scale”?
Besides size, there are different sofa features that make it appear sleeker and trimmer. In other words, perfect for a small space. These features include:
* Few curves with clean, straight, and simple lines
* Straight or no arms
* Legs remaining visible underneath the sofa, that is, they are not covered by upholstered flaps
Futons also have features that give this sofa a small-scale appearance. They have simple, straight lines, narrow arms, with no upholstered flaps. Although many are wider than what would be considered small-scale, their simplicity makes them a natural for small spaces.
By simply changing the cover of a futon, you have the ability to change its overall look. You can go with a more traditional feel by having a design of large flowers and leaves on a subdued color palate of dark brown and beige. Or, if your style leans toward contemporary, you could choose plain beige, black or any other neutral color.
With their sleek, simple lines, most futons naturally have a modern contemporary look. However, this can be curtailed into a more traditional look with the use of different designs in coverings.
The other wonderful feature of a futon is its ability to be changed into a bed. Once the cover begins to wear, it is easy to replace with a new one.
Taking Size into Account
Most sofas for small spaces range in size from 72 inches or smaller. It should be noted that if you go too small, you might end up with seating for two instead of three. That is, you’ll end up with a loveseat instead of a sofa.
If you wanted something smaller than a loveseat, you could purchase a settee or Chair and a Half. Chair and a Halfs usually range around 49″ or smaller and settees range between 40 to 50 inches in length.
Below is a list of measurements to help you remember approximate sizes of small-scale sofas as compared to loveseats and settees. Make certain to take measurements of the space you need to obtain seating for before making a purchase. This will alleviate any unnecessary headaches and hassles from purchasing the wrong size seating for your room.
* Small Scale Sofas: 72″ or smaller
* Loveseats: 63″ or smaller
* Chair and a Halfs: 59″ or smaller
* Settees: 49″ or smaller
Use the above list as a guide, not as a hard-and-fast rule. There are sofas, loveseats, Chair and a Halfs and settees that do not meet this criteria. However, the above measurements are the norm.
Also, it is possible to find a sofa that is over 72″ that would still afford your room a spacious feel. For example, if you discover a sofa that is over 72″ with a sleek appearance and no upholstered flaps, it may work perfectly in your room if space allows.
It basically comes down to your individual taste.
Another option for a sofa in a space that would normally fit only a loveseat would be to look for sofas without arms. This would allow seating for three instead of two. Sofas usually have large arms that take up a fair amount of unnecessary space. By eliminating arms, you would increase your seating area!
This may not be for everyone, as you may not find an armless sofa comfortable enough for you. However, due to its space saving potential, it is worth investigating.
A Word to Those Lovers of Traditional Furnishings
Small-scale sofas tend to appeal more to lovers of modern or contemporary furnishings than those who prefer traditional. This can be disappointing if you prefer traditional furnishings, but you need a space saving sofa!
If your taste leans toward traditional, the sleek, straight lines of contemporary furnishings may appear cold and sterile and would not lend to the homey warm feel that you enjoy.
You should keep in mind that it is not necessary to purchase a sofa with all the features noted previously. For example, you could purchase a sofa with arms and legs that have curves instead of the contemporary straight lines. If the curves are not too thick, then this may satisfy your desire for a traditional look while still saving on space.
Summing Up
Having a small living room, family room, dorm room or living room has its disadvantages when it comes to seating. You want to get the most “bang for your buck”, by having as much seating as possible while still giving your room a spacious feel. Not always an easy feat in a small space!
There are particular features in a sofa that would give it a small-scale look such as straight lines, small arms and legs that raise the sofa. You could even maximize your seating by purchasing an armless sofa. This would allow seating for three instead of two.
Even if you do not appreciate all the features listed above in a sofa, you can pick one feature and look for other features that you love. For example, if you have a traditional lean in furnishings, you could purchase a sofa with curved arms and legs, but have it raised off the floor by legs uncovered by upholstered flaps. This way, you achieve a spacious look (by the negative space left underneath the sofa) but retain your unique sense of style and taste in the sofa.
Bottom line, you don’t have to sacrifice your style in home décor to achieve a spacious feel in a small space.

Points to Consider When Buying a New Sofa
Size
The size of the sofa is not just a consideration relative to the space, but also to the style of the sofa and the impact that it has on the room as a whole. Measure your room before shopping for a sofa – Roomful Express offers measurements for all of the sofas in the store online for you to make sure that they fit before you visit the store to choose between them. Look at the selection online and make sure that your favorites fit your room before printing them out and bringing them to the store. Consider using our online virtual room planner tool to help with in laying out your room.
Don’t forget to measure the door frames and staircases that your sofa will have to pass through to get into your home.
“Size can mean many things when it comes to sofas – height, width and depth. If you’re someone who loves to snuggle, a deep sofa can make a big difference to your comfort. If your room is an informal room, a short sofa can fit better with the style of the room. A wide or long sofa can seat many people.”
Style
Sofas come in many styles. There are sofas that are formal, sofas that are comfortable, sofas that are plush, sofas that are modern and edgy. Think about the style of your overall room. If your room is filled with antiques a modern-styled sofa is unlikely to fit with the style of the room. As the largest piece of furniture in the room the sofa will often set the style for the entire space.
Covering
The choice of covering for a sofa can depend on the function of the piece, as well as the color and style of the room it will be in.
Leather Sofas
Leather sofas are hardwearing and durable and can be a good choice for families with small children as they are wipe-clean. They are also known for being a premium fabric which gives them an expensive feel and makes them suitable for formal rooms. Modern leather processing abilities have given leather more softness than ever before and there is a wide range of leather sofas that are every bit as soft and cozy as any other material. There are many synthetic leather-like materials that compare well to real leather and can often be washable, such as micro-suede.
Fabric Sofas
Fabric can have a major impact on the comfort of the sofa as well as the style. A soft fabric, like a chenille or plush, will be pleasant to touch and will add to the comfort of the piece. Crisp, smooth fabrics can help to make the whole room look neat and tidy. Removable covers that can be put into the washing machine are worth considering if your sofa often doubles as a snack area.
Color
Sofas come in many colors and patterns, and making the choice between them can seem overwhelming. Before leaving home to look at the sofa in-store, take a good look at the room in which the sofa will live. Look at the surrounding colors and materials and look for colors that will work with those materials. Materials don’t have to match but they should coordinate. If you look in a Roomful Express store you will find lots of inspiration as we have designers put together rooms that work harmoniously so that you can take inspiration from them. Walk through the entire store and look for roomfuls and furniture that is similar to what is already in your room and see what our designers put together in those rooms. Often you can find elements from different roomfuls that will work with your own home. Take your time and look around until you are comfortable with your choice.
Comfort
A comfortable sofa for one person may be too soft for someone else, which is why we carry such a large variety of sofa textures. When you find a style of sofa that you like spend some time sitting on it to ensure that it is perfect for you. If you are someone who loves to put their feet up and snuggle on the couch then try that for a while in the store. If you are someone who sits upright to read often, you might find a stiffer cushion more suitable to your personal style.
Durability
Some fabrics and materials are more durable than others, so consider the treatment the sofa is going to get in your home before making your choice. Wooden arms and trim are beautiful, but if you have small children or pets they may end up getting scratched in a way that fabric arms would not. Removable cushions can be rearranged to ensure even wear (and are great for building forts!) Cushions that are fixed to the sofa frame can get additional support if they are going to be well-used.
All Roomful Express sofas are made with real living in mind. We use durable materials and quality construction so your new sofa can stand up to the life you live.

Dining Tables: The Latest Trends
Your dining table is the centerpiece of all your meals. It should be sturdy, yet fashionable, reflecting your personal taste and unique style. Yet, if you’ve been using the same dining table for years, maybe it’s time for an update. Here are the latest contemporary trends to rock the world of dining tables.
Round Glass Table: Glass tables aren’t just for the living room or nightstand any longer. With a designer base, e.g. the Mensa table, with its birch plywood pattern reflecting a hanging pendant, the focus will be on the immaculate design. It’s another case of form and function.
Mismatched Dining Tables: Often times, during family dinners, you’ll have two tables placed side by side, one taller table reserved for the grown-ups, and a shorter kiddie table for the young ones. Why not take this idea a step further and find two mismatching tables of the same height and pull them together to make one table? It’s chic and eclectic.
High and Low: Mixing high end dining tables with low costing chairs will not only save you some money, it will also create a stylish and eye-catching look that will add charm to any dining room.
Dining Tables in the Kitchen: Many people are opting to place their dining tables smack in the middle of their kitchens, merging kitchen space with dining space. These homeowners aren’t afraid to place full sized tables in the midst of their open kitchens. It’s an ingenious idea, which adds a sense of community and sharing to the kitchen. Of course, this only really works if you’ve got a large, ample kitchen to begin with.
Secret Dining Table: A couple in the woodsy foothills of Idaho built their 836 square-feet dream house out of passive solar straw bales and materials salvaged from the local landfill. This eco-house is on the small side, so they’ve actually constructed a hidden dining table; it’s in point of fact, sunk into the living room floor, with built in seating. When not in use, the space is covered up with planks.
Convertible Dining Tables: Many people these days don’t actually sit down and eat in their dining rooms anymore. They end up sitting in front of the TV and eating on the couch. If you find yourself in this situation, consider a convertible coffee table which can double as your dining table. There are actually a wide variety of height adjustable tables on the market; these can be raised and often expanded to dining height when you want to chow down.
Counter Height Dining Tables: With these tables, you feel like you’re dining at a bar. It’s definitely a contemporary look, that works great with open, loft-like spaces. High dining tables can also be used in the kitchen to seat 2 or 3 people for breakfast. Beware though, this isn’t for the shorter among us.
Suspended Dining Table: This is sort of a concept piece but it works well for the more avant- garde minded. A suspended dining table hangs from the ceiling; rather than having legs, it has wires. The setup is more difficult than your average table, but this does give your place some edge.

Architectural Design – Modern Architectural Design Softwares
With the influx of modern computing technology, architectural design has undergone a sea change. Modern architectural design employs a wide suite of architectural design software to achieve architectural building design like never before. Today, architectural design firms execute projects of such flawless quality and at unbelievably fast turnaround times.
Modern architectural design softwares allow quick integration of modifications to the entire architectural design project. Therefore, there is no repetition of work. Softwares like Chief Architect, Revit, can seamlessly allow changes in all three dimensions, when any change is brought about in only one dimension. Thus, it saves time out of making changes in all facets. With the application of 3D animation softwares like 3Ds Max and Maya, both architectural building design and architectural interior design have been elevated to a new paradigm.
Architectural interior design has entered into a new zone entirely. Today, there is such huge emphasis on building interiors that clients are ready to spend as much as the building construction cost itself. Subtle elements of architectural interior design like lighting, shades, contours, and space utilization is regarded with intricate detailing. Clients want to have the best living spaces money could buy. Be it architectural home design or architectural office design, people view their living space as an extension of their persona.
Architectural house design too has become increasingly complex in design, due to greater flexibility allowed by technology and building materials. Even standard architectural design firms give the finest in modern architectural design styles inspired from creative movements like cubism, structuralism, post-modernism, de-constructivism, etc. Pre-fabricated building components are in greater preference by architectural design firms.
Architectural design softwares allow awe-evoking arrangement of steel, concrete, and glass to create complex building structures that might resemble a beetle or a lotus flower. The Sydney Opera House and the Guggenheim Museum are two solid examples of such architectural design finesse. Architectural design firms too have become highly competent and find new ways of implementing latest technology drawn from diverse fields into architectural building design.

Gas Heating In Style
“My heating system fails to meet my expectations and needs, especially during the colder stretches of winter”. “My mother needs a few more degrees in her bedroom / I want a little more heat in my working space”. “I would very much like to put that fireplace to good use, but classical log fires are hard to maintain, dirty and costly”. If any of these statements ring true for you, take a good look at gas fires. Running on one of many types of natural gas, these systems offer high efficiency for low costs and a clean operation all around.
Let us take the case of the fireplace. These rarer and rarer pieces of architecture and art are too often left to age as a purpose-less decorative item, when they could be put to perfect use by installing an inset gas fire. The chimney will also enjoy rediscovering its functionality, as these models channel their exhaust gases through it. Style is at home with this variant, with elegant masterpieces in the basket-form section, traditional trims and fascias on open ones or contemporary materials such as chrome or brass on glass-fronted, highly efficient types.
Most of us, however, live in modern buildings, constructed without the chimney of old, but with a thin pre-cast flue that doesnt really cater for the needs of gas fires. Considering how frequent these cases are, it is not surprising that there are quite a number of options that do not require any hearth or flue at all – you can install them on walls at any level you desire, and they vent to the outside through various types of pipes. The balanced flue employs two pipes, one within the other, to bring in air from the outside for the combustion and to simultaneously eliminate the carbon monoxide resulting from the burning. The power flue works in a similar manner, but requires an electricity source for its fan and its detection system that automatically turns off operations in case of exceeding levels of noxious gases.
Having left the best for last, without further ado – the flueless gas fire: easy to install (no need for any building works), suitable for any wall in any room (no need for any kind of vent) and green as grass (converts CO into CO2). Say hello to your new roommate! These most technologically advanced systems are also the most efficient ones, with claims going up to 100%. Further to the mentioned styles, flueless fires are the only ones that come in the mobile form – simply wheel them to wherever they are needed.
When choosing the gas fire most appropriate to your needs, keep in mind that safety must come first – if your fire uses the buildings chimney, have it checked for leakages before hand; make sure the room in which you install a flueless system is large enough and well ventilated; dont dry your clothes on the gas fire, as it is the number one cause of accidental fires. Now that you have all that in mind, all you have to decide is whether the chrome looks better than the wood, whether to have an open fire or a glass-fronted one, whether it should be making-a-statement-red or classy-and -sober-black.

Five Reasons An Ottoman Can Improve The Look Of Your House
Ottomans are a common sight in many households. These attractive and functional pieces of furniture offer not just comfort, but (depending on the ottoman) storage space as well. These modern footstools serve those purposes, and they can also improve the look of your house. An ottoman is a small footstool for resting ones feet but it also adds to the décor of one’s home. Here are five reasons why an ottoman is a great addition to your house.
1. An ottoman offers additional seating without the need for a larger piece of furniture, thus helping to avoid overcrowding in a room. Yes, ottomans are traditionally used as footstools, but today’s ottomans are often large and upholstered, and double as extra seating.
When placed at the base of a chair, an ottoman functions as a footstool, but when removed from the chair and placed elsewhere in the room, it can function as a seat. When the need for extra seating is no longer necessary, it can be placed back at the base of a chair. Its size makes it very easy to move.
2. An ottoman can function as an attractive coffee table, again helping to ease overcrowding in a room. Coffee tables are not always necessary, but sometimes they come in handy when serving beverages or food in the living room. They can however, be cumbersome in a small room, and leave little room for walking around.
An ottoman can take the place of a coffee table if need be. By placing a flat serving tray on top of the ottoman, it can be turned into the perfect place to rest a cup of coffee or an appetizer. If you move it to the front of the couch, there is an excellent resting place for a bowl of popcorn when watching a movie. When the movie is done, move it back to its original spot, and the flow of traffic in the room can move once again. This works best with a rectangular shaped ottoman that is made of hard leather since it is more difficult for the drink to spill.
3. An ottoman can also help improve the organization of a room because many ottomans are designed with storage space inside of them. The seat of the ottoman can lift up to reveal a hidden compartment. This compartment can be used to store blankets, magazines, children’s toys, or other items that can clutter up a room.
Some people buy two matching ottoman storage cubes so they can store separate things in them. All the while, they hide what otherwise could be scattered around the room. This is also useful for a larger room since it can add a stylish flair to the room that is not obtained with only one ottoman.
4. An ottoman can add a splash of color, pattern, or texture to a room with matching furniture. When an ottoman and chair are purchased together, they often have matching upholstery. However, when purchased separately, an ottoman can have a completely different, yet complementary fabric, than the rest of the furniture.
If a room has a sofa and a chair that use the same pattern, you can choose a color from that design for you ottoman. A solid color ottoman in that color can complement the seating well. If most of the furniture in a room is covered in fabric, a wooden ottoman can bring an additional texture into the room, helping to improve how interesting the room appears.
5. Since ottomans are small and usually square or rectangular (although some are circular), they are usually easier and less expensive to re-upholster than other pieces of furniture. It would be easy to change the look of a room just by changing the fabric on the ottoman and perhaps rearranging the rest of the furniture. It would be one of the most inexpensive ways to change up a room.
Ottomans are also very easy to slipcover because of their boxy shape. Many low-cost slipcover options are even less expensive than reupholstering. By having a couple of different slipcover options, the look of a room could be changed frequently. A bonus is that a slipcover can be removed and washed easily so dirt from the bottom of shoes that have rested on the ottoman can be cleaned off easily.
An ottoman is one small piece of furniture with many different functions. Adding one to any room in the house is sure to improve the look of a home by adding style, storage, and extra space. These ottomans are a great option because although stylish, you can easily change their look if you decide to change the theme of your room. These benefits make owning an ottoman well worth it and their ability to act as a storage container is excellent.

In this article we will discuss the different Feng Shui tips that you can employ whether you are just about to design your kitchen or if you are about to perform renovation.
1. Kitchen Position. When implementing Feng Shui in your kitchen, the first thing you need to consider about is the position of the kitchen. Ideally, the optimal position for the kitchen is a space that you don’t see when you enter the house, this would of course be the back of your house.

Choosing Your Dining Room Furniture
Choosing the Best Style for Your Needs
If you are planning on purchasing new dining room furniture, you have a big decision to make. The furniture will be in your home for a long time and will become a part of many family memories. How can you determine what dining room furniture is right for your home? When you’re choosing dining room furniture, you want to be sure that you are buying a table and chairs that will fit well into your room and give you the flexibility and space you need for those special meals. You want a table that will look great when it is not in use, able to accommodate people comfortably, and wide enough to fit all place settings and serving dishes. Also consider how often you will be using the room and what for.
Pick Dining Room Furniture That Fits Your Lifestyle
Is your dining room more of a multifunction room rather than just a room for dining? Do the kids do their homework at the table? Do you use it as a workspace for projects? Is this where family and friends gather to play games? If so, you may want a more casual style for your dining room. The popular pub-style tables teamed with bar stools could be a good choice for you. You can comfortably seat up to eight people equitably around the table.
If, on the other hand, your dining room serves as a space for informal family dinners and gatherings, you may want to consider larger dining room furniture to accommodate your gatherings. If you use your dining room for family meals, you may want to consider purchasing casual dining room furniture that is both practical and pleasing to the eye.If the dining room is a place your family frequents daily, you will want to make sure it is also durable, welcoming, and comfortable.
If you frequently entertain company, and your dining room is reserved strictly for special occasions and gatherings, such as holidays, you may want to go with a more formal and elegant approach to your dining room furniture. You will want your dining room furniture to be warm and elegant for your guests, and to create a memorable experience. If this is the case, formal dining room furniture may be the right choice for your needs.
Implement Your Personal Style
Dining room furniture is as varied as the families that use it. Your dining room furniture should reveal your personal style. Styles of dining room furniture can vary from traditional and classic to contemporary and retro. Although there are dozens of style to choose from, it is best if you stick with one style when furnishing the dining room. You can find dining sets that are sleek and contemporary, ornately traditional, or rough hewn and rustic. Do you want the dining room to have a cohesive feel with the rest of your home? If so, dining room furniture that coordinates with the architectural style of your house and the decor in your other rooms will achieve that affect. Of course, you can always add some diversity. For instance, a metal table usually looks contemporary, but choosing one with curved legs will add more formality to the room. If you want to mix and match, do so with caution. Although it is best to stick with one particular furniture style, it is best to create a beautiful and individually stylized dining room by combining various style choices. Just be sure you are aware of what may or may not coordinate with one another. Style choices are plentiful. You are sure to find one perfect for your own individual style.
The Size Factor
The size of your dining room is just as important as the style of the furniture. You want your room to be comfortable, not overcrowded with furnishings. Be sure to measure before you purchase any dining room furniture. Know exactly how much space you have in the room for various pieces of dining room furniture. You don’t want your room to be overcrowded, and you also don’t want it to look bare. Your dining room chairs will need to be at least 48 inches away from the wall or other furniture to allow ease of movement. Also remember to think about the length of the table when its leaves are extended.
The size of your dining room will be greatly responsible for determining which pieces will fit in to the room. The dining room table will be the heart and soul of the dining room, the centerpiece of the furniture selections you make. All other pieces of furniture should be based around your dining room table. When looking at dining room furniture, you should consider that if the room is large, a large dining room table will make the room feel more complete. You can add side tables, a hutch, curio cabinet, or other small tables around the room as well. If you have a smaller dining room, a small to medium sized table will be best.
Choosing the perfect dining room furniture can be quite simple when you keep the above points in mind. The best way to go about purchasing your furniture is to take your time, and to be sure that you are happy with what you have chosen. Be sure to look around at all the various styles and sizes, and consider which would be best. Finding new dining room furniture should be fun and exciting.

Ways To Prevent Bed Bug Attacks
As children we’re subjected to many horror stories. So it’s easy to assume that when we’re told not to let the “bed bugs bite” that it’s a lot like us being told not to open our closet door. But now we know better, we’ve seen the truth about them and we know we really must be careful, but how do we stop bed bug bites?
With all the misguided people in the world it’s easy to understand why there is so much information that it floating around in space. Unfortunately a great deal of it is wrong. There is this rumor that bed bugs are actually creatures that hide in you mattress and eat the dead skin that humans shed when they’re asleep. This isn’t true. These creatures actually suck blood just like mosquitoes. They only difference is, because they are so much smaller their marks are to scale.
When it all boils down bed bugs are pests and no one wants pests in their house. So how do we get rid of them? The most common method is to kill them via pesticides. The only thing with pesticides and bed bugs is that they have built up their own special immunities to a lot of the poisons we have available to us. Because of that we have to find and purchase pesticides that are made specifically with these particular insects in mind. In doing so we also have to keep in mind that these critters enjoy commonly used areas. That being the case we have to ensure that the sprays and powders we get are safe for pets.
High temperatures can get rid of them. If at all possible, you can use your homes heater to heat your house to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for twenty minutes and your house will be bed bug free. This will kill them in all stages of life.
It’s not all that difficult to understand why doing something like that would be impossible for some. So, instead you can use a hand held steam cleaner on furniture and in closets to kill bed bugs. This will take more time but the bugs will be killed quickly so you will not find yourself having to go over many areas more than once. However, keep in mind that these creatures do not only make nests in the cloth parts of furniture. They will also make nests in the nooks and crannies of furniture, such as in the frame of your bed or in the under wire of couches. A dryer that reaches the same temperatures can be used to sanitize clothing.
The Barrier Method is also a helpful tool when trying to control your bed bug problems. As these creatures can’t pass over petroleum jelly or climb up metal or glass very well you can put the feet of your furniture in glass jars or metal cans to keep them out. Keep in mind, though, that this method may be dangerous with heavier pieces and may not be effective if the jelly is wiped up.
There are many ways you can take when you’re trying to stop bed bug bites. All you can do is pick the one that works the best for you and stick with it. Good luck getting rid of those blood sucking critters!
